Whilst Google is big
Google is massive, simply put its an application for the retrieval of info on so the World Wide Web so its simply application software that allows users to access information on the internet.
We use Google when planning our trips to get as much info as possible pertaining to the route such as;
- Points of interest
- The best route
- Availability of fuel
- Weather conditions ( This affects your choice of clothing )
- Road conditions
But to my mind this needs to be supplemented by good books as well, in particular a good map or atlas as well as travelogues and even magazines.
This all helps with the planning and ensures that you know where you are going and the best route to take. Before we did this on our first trip we ended up travelling in circles before finding our way.
This also wasted a good deal of time which can be ill-afforded on a long trip.
Good planning using Google as well as books can then be transferred into a note book which really assists. And then en route you can use your cellphone but in many cases reception is extremely patchy. So a well written plan makes travelling a breeze.
But do not be afraid to deviate if you notice something interesting even if it adds time to your trip.
There is a lot to see out there and its not all on Google!
Be very careful with self catering options as the availability of fresh produce is not always easy. Then don’t forget the charcoal and firelighters. It helps to squeeze a fridge into the boot – even if you see it to bring produce home
Our next trip will be late May and this promises to be extremely interesting as it is to the site of one of the great battles of the Zulu war.
If my memory serves me correctly it was where the most Victoria Crosses were awarded in a single conflict. We will visit two battlefields but in this instance will take a guide as the experience will be enhanced by being with someone who knows what he is talking about and can go into the full detail.
I will go into more detail after the trip and hope to share some amazing pictures.Planning has started.
One of the things that are important is to also gather information locally in the form of brochures and pamphlets, this makes it so much easier to record the trip.
And then never forget the pictures , that are a visual record and are so important to share the experience.Dont be afraid to share your pics on social media as well – people will interact and it will prove to be invaluable- happy travels !
