One could quite literally spend a month shopping along the Midlands Meander without ever visiting the same store twice. The variety is remarkable. Yet, as with any destination, some shops stand head and shoulders above the rest. These are the places that offer something genuinely original and distinctive – stores where you are likely to find not only beautiful items, but meaningful and useful mementos that capture the character, craftsmanship, and spirit of the Natal Midlands.
Spiral Blue is exactly the kind of shop that reminds me why I love exploring the Midlands Meander. Even the name is enchanting, and stepping through the doorway feels a little like entering a magical cave filled with treasures gathered from distant corners of the world.
Situated on the Midlands Meander in KwaZulu-Natal, not far from the Nelson Mandela Capture Site and right next door to Piggly Wiggly, Spiral Blue is a wonderfully tranquil place to browse. The moment you arrive, you are greeted by a riot of colour – vibrant clothing, fluttering flags, sparkling jewellery and fascinating curiosities that immediately draw you in. The friendly service only adds to the experience.
Inside, every corner reveals something unexpected. Shelves are packed with sterling silver and stone jewellery, crystals and gemstones, scarves, clothing, bags, hats, candles, incense, homeware, décor, linen and handcrafted treasures sourced from around the globe. There are chanting beads, wind chimes, jewel boxes, ornaments, spiritual artefacts and countless other delights that make it almost impossible to leave empty-handed.
What I particularly loved was simply wandering through the store, taking in the colours, textures and aromas. It is a feast for the senses and a haven for anyone searching for unusual gifts or meaningful keepsakes. Outside, the peaceful setting of trees, shade and benches creates a relaxed, free-spirited atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down and linger a little longer.
Spiral Blue offers the sort of indulgent retail therapy that is becoming increasingly rare – a place where browsing is as enjoyable as buying. It ignites the imagination, delights the senses and, if my experience is anything to go by, will have you returning more than once during your Midlands Meander journey.
One of the most inspiring stops on the Midlands Meander is Tsonga, a proudly South African footwear brand whose story is rooted in craftsmanship, community, and innovation.
Founded in the late 1990s by footwear industry veteran Peter Maree, Tsonga emerged during a difficult period for local manufacturers, when cheap imports were flooding the market. Rather than competing on price, Maree chose to focus on quality, creating premium leather footwear that celebrated African-inspired design and traditional handcraftsmanship.
Living near Lidgetton in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Maree recognised the remarkable hand-stitching skills of local rural women and saw an opportunity to transform those talents into a sustainable enterprise. An abandoned school building became the Thread of Hope workshop, where women were trained to create handcrafted leather shoes and accessories. The project grew into much more than a manufacturing facility, incorporating a community daycare centre, vegetable gardens, and training initiatives that continue to support local families.
What makes Tsonga shoes special is their combination of comfort, quality, and authenticity. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather and finished with traditional hand-stitching, each pair is designed to mould naturally to the foot while reflecting a timeless style inspired by Africa’s landscapes and heritage. Every product is made locally and produced with a strong commitment to ethical manufacturing and community development.
Today, Tsonga has expanded into handbags and leather accessories and operates 19 concept stores across South Africa. Yet its heart remains in the Midlands, where visitors can browse beautifully crafted products while discovering the remarkable story behind them.

Tucked away in Nottingham Road in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Shuttleworth Weaving is one of the region’s most fascinating craft destinations. This family-owned studio has been producing exceptional handwoven textiles for decades, combining heritage techniques with contemporary design.
Helen and Andy Shuttleworth have lived on their smallholding in Fort Nottingham since 1976, settling on a hilltop surrounded by indigenous forests. As members of the original Midlands Meander when it was first established, they helped shape the region’s reputation as a centre for arts and crafts. Today, they have retired from the day-to-day running of the business, which is now led by their son, Rob, and his wife, Julia.
Both Rob and Julia hold Fine Art degrees and joined the family business in 2005 after brief careers elsewhere. Rob focuses on developing patterns, textures, and finishes, while Julia experiments with fibres and colours to create distinctive new designs. Their philosophy centres on producing unique, beautifully crafted pieces in a setting that is as inspiring as the work itself. The farm is home to horses, dogs, a cat, chickens, vegetable gardens, and an abundance of wildlife, including porcupines, bushbuck, aardvark, bush pigs, baboons, and eagles.
The studio is particularly renowned for its custom-made rugs, woven from premium materials including South African mohair, Namibian Karakul wool, and other natural fibres. Using specially designed looms built on-site, the team creates pieces of remarkable scale and quality for homes, lodges, hotels, and private collections. More than simply a retail stop, Shuttleworth Weaving offers visitors an opportunity to experience the creative spirit of the Natal Midlands. Whether searching for a distinctive souvenir, a luxurious mohair throw, or an authentic local experience, this workshop provides a memorable glimpse into one of South Africa’s enduring artisanal traditions.
There is a distinct feeling that accompanies shopping on the Midlands Meander. Unlike the anonymity of large shopping malls and chain stores, many of the artisanal businesses here seem deeply connected to the communities around them. Behind the handcrafted products, carefully curated shelves, and welcoming storefronts are real stories of skills being preserved, livelihoods being created, and families being supported. It is retail with a human face.
