Cactus Thiemann
In Marrakesh, as elsewhere, travel is often an exercise in graceful compromise. We had arranged a driver in the hope of chasing blue skies and sunshine – both for this outing and for the luminous gardens of Jardin Majorelle – yet dawn arrived wrapped in heavy clouds and rain. With cancellation no longer an option, we surrendered to the day as it was offered.
Visiting at the tail end of winter, just before spring and the swell of high season, gifted us the luxury of quiet paths and unhurried moments, even if some corners had not yet reached their seasonal splendour.
Still, there is a particular beauty in such in-between times: colours softened by mist, streets untroubled by crowds, and the gentle reminder that travel, like life, is always a balance of trade-offs. In truth, I find I prefer tempered light and solitude to dazzling sunshine shared with the restless throngs.
Just beyond Marrakesh, at the edge of the ochre plains with the Atlas Mountains rising in the distance, Cactus Thiemann unfolds as one of North Africa’s most remarkable botanical landscapes.
Founded in the early 1960s by German agricultural engineer Hans Thiemann, the 70 000 square metre estate has grown into the largest cactus farm on the continent and a living testament to his vision.
Drawn by Morocco’s long, sun-drenched days and semi-arid climate, Thiemann recognized that the region offered ideal conditions for cultivating cacti and succulents – plants uniquely adapted to thrive with minimal water. What began as an experiment in sustainable agriculture evolved into an extraordinary collection of more than 150 species sourced from the Americas, South Africa, and the Mediterranean. Cactus Thiemann is home to one of the most diverse and extensive collections of cacti in Africa.
Today, vast geometric fields of towering aloe, agave, and prickly pear stretch toward the horizon, creating a surreal, almost lunar landscape that rewards those willing to venture along Marrakesh’s dusty outer roads.
Some specimens reach impressive heights – the tallest cactus stands nearly eight meters high and is over 80 years old, famously transported overland from Europe in a Mercedes Unimog (on display in the middle of the gardens).
Visitors wander through avenues lined with sculptural giants reminiscent of the deserts of Mexico and the American Southwest, interspersed with delicate succulents displaying intricate forms and seasonal blooms.
Beyond its visual drama, the farm operates as both garden and research facility, supplying expertly cultivated plants to some of Marrakesh’s most celebrated green spaces, including Jardin Majorelle.
More than a botanical curiosity, Cactus Thiemann stands as a model of environmental stewardship. Requiring minimal irrigation and relying largely on natural rainfall, the farm demonstrates how drought-resistant species can be cultivated sustainably in water-scarce regions.
With deep root systems that stabilize soil and help combat desertification, these plants hold ecological as well as ornamental value.
Since Thiemann’s death in 2001, the nursery has been lovingly managed by his widow, Fatima, and daughters Magda and Roselinde, who continue to expand his legacy. This tranquil desert sanctuary offers not only a feast for plant enthusiasts but also a compelling glimpse into the harmonious balance between cultivation, conservation, and artistry.
As the sun sets over Marrakech and the desert sky turns to gold and rose, Cactus Thiemann lingers in the heart long after the visit ends. It is more than a botanical farm – it is a living testament to harmony between cultivation and conservation, where resilience blooms in every sculpted silhouette and quiet pathway.
In this tranquil sanctuary on the edge of the city, time slows, senses awaken, and nature’s quiet strength reveals itself in the most elegant forms. A visit here is not simply a journey through a garden, but a gentle reminder of the beauty that thrives where patience, care, and respect for the earth come together.
